What is the name of the Catholic Bishop ring? What does this ring symbolise?

    September 17, 2023

In the Catholic Church, the giving of a ring to a bishop during his episcopal ordination is a symbolic gesture with deep meaning. The ring is known as the "episcopal ring" or "pontifical ring," and it holds several symbolic representations.

    1. Sign of Authority: The ring is a sign of the bishop's authority and his role as a spiritual leader within the Church. It represents his office and the power entrusted to him to shepherd the faithful.

    2. Sign of Marriage to the Church: The ring symbolises the bishop's spiritual marriage to the Church and to Christ her head. It signifies his commitment, fidelity, and devotion to the Church and her teachings. Just as a wedding ring is a sign of the bond between spouses, the episcopal ring signifies the bishop's bond with the Church.

    3. Signet Ring: Historically, signet rings were used to seal official documents as a mark of authenticity and authority. Similarly, the bishop's ring is seen as a signet ring, representing his role as a witness and guardian of the Church's teachings and traditions.

    4. Successor to the Apostles: The ring also connects the bishop to the apostolic tradition. It is a reminder of the bishop's role as a successor to the apostles, who were chosen by Jesus Christ to carry out His mission on earth.

The ring is typically worn on the fourth finger of the bishop's right hand, often on the same finger as a wedding ring. It is a visible symbol to the faithful and serves as a reminder of the bishop's spiritual authority and his commitment to the Church.

What are the words accompanying this rite?

During the presentation of the episcopal ring in a Catholic episcopal ordination, the presiding bishop or archbishop usually says the following words:

"Receive this ring, the seal of fidelity. Adorn yourself with the splendour of holy doctrine, so that, infused with the dignity of the pontifical office, you may shine forth in the example of your life for the people of God."

These words emphasise the significance of the ring as a symbol of fidelity, the importance of upholding and proclaiming the teachings of the Church, and the call for the bishop to be a shining example of holiness and service to the people entrusted to his care.

It's important to note that there may be variations in the wording used during the rite, as different liturgical traditions or local customs may have slightly different formulations. The above words, however, capture the essence of the message conveyed during the presentation of the episcopal ring.
